Chess

So now that K Kangal has confirmed himself as another Doggy (doesn't know how to play chess but does know how to use a chess engine), I thought that I would give a clue (before the lines are closed) and here it is -

I'm not sure what language is being spoken but if it's Finnish perhaps Mowl Mowl can translate..

Kangers K Kangal, what's the best move for black here, what did the engine tell you? 😆

I mean, it's not like I didn't give you enough clues..

Perhaps you need some..

Yes, the move is Qh7+ (queen sacrifice)

Mowl Mowl is probably wondering - "Was that a smothered mate, Jam?"

Well, sort of. In a classic smothered mate the (short-range) knight (which can jump over other pieces) delivers mate with the checkmated king unable to move because it's blocked by its own pieces.

But here we see that there isn't a piece on g8.. and that's where the white bishop on c4 comes in. Heavily under attack by black's two most powerful pieces, if the black king could move to g8, it would be all over.

The bishop in chess is nicknamed the sniper.

Mowl Mowl has been PMing me furiously! since I mentioned this in the Arsefield's Hall of Shame thread.

So after Qxa6+, bxa is forced.. and then you need to visualise a little here where the black pawn is now, and then it's Nb5+ and what's that, yes correct, a double check, we mentioned that earlier on in the thread and with a double check the king invariably has to move (in this case to a8) and then white delivers mate with the rook..

Ra7#

The final position looks like this (I've been a bit lazy (not) drawing all of the pieces on Chessboard Image but you get the picture) -

So I hope you all enjoyed that humdinger of a King's Gambit between two famous Russian GMs and former WCs (replete with their thoughts during the game).

Mowl Mowl has been PMing me furiously! saying that he doesn't understand what happened.

So why did Karpov resign? 🤔

Yes, it's a little hard to see, the commentators didn't say much about it and although the chess girl does an admirable job keeping up with the position on the live audience board as time control looms..

So after Spassky moves Qb8+, Karpov resigns (instantly) in this position:

Why? After making his only legal move (out of check) Kd7, Spassky will play the lethal Nc5+

Black's king doesn't have a square to move to; white's king controls c6, queen controls the 8th rank and the black diagonal and knight controls e6.

This of course isn't checkmate but it forces Karpov to trade his queen for Spassky's knight.. and then king and queen versus king is a win.

One of the things that I'm conscious of are disconnects.

So roc_abilly roc_abilly constantly pooh-poohs chess, as it relates to intelligence or IQ (and of course he also pooh-poohs IQ as it relates to intelligence).

So why the f*ck is 'billy (stunningly and bravely) posting a picture of a brown boy (presumed Indian) playing chess? Is he going to be another "paper shuffler", or whatever? 🤔

No point that concerns you really, Jambo. Just dealing with you is like a grisly battle with the hydra of mythological fantasy and not all its heads are cut off yet. I was merely revealing a couple more of your many heads, and seeing what their being brought into consciousness might evoke in you.
