The 'American Dream'? It is a con based on the idea that if you amass enough money you'll be happy. The handy side of it is that people blame themselves if they don't achieve it, or like redneck Republicans get to blame someone else if they don't achieve it.

The idea there is a heaven on earth of prosperity just around the corner is the best thing US corporates and inherited wealth ever came up with. It keeps the goons chasing a dream, for which the vast majority of them will remain a dream.

There was a version of it above the gates to Auschwitz. 'Arbeit mach frei ('work will set you free'). Swindle your brother. Pimp out your sister. The hustle is all that matters. It is your right under the Constitution and Bill of Rights to pursue happiness.

And happiness, for some bizarre and unexplained reason, is tied in with having a back yard big enough to have a large wooden staved bucket in it which you and your hard-eyed wife can perch while bubbles are blown around your obese arse.

Seriously. What is that. Large houses in the US have as many bathrooms as they do bedrooms and for some vulgar reason it is the height of prosperity to sit in a bubble filled large wooden bucket in your back yard.
 
The vast majority of Americans buy guns for the same reason they buy anything. So they can pose with their purchase. It is why so many American male teens who feel they have been emasculated become fascinated with the macho payoff they get from an AR-15.

The rest is down to the effects of the internet. Teenager heads for a flat roof or a nearby school with said AR-15 in search of their own masculinity and 'respect' they feel they deserve but has been taken away from them by an unfair world.

American gun nuts are faggots who need a weapon to feel empowered.
