When I paid my last full monthly rental fee in Ranelagh (above the cute little Italian deli with the tables and baskets outside) it came to €800 p/m, and that was in 1999. I'd already been sub-letting it to Trinity College student/housing panel while I was away on tour and they paid the full amount along with the use of all of my furniture and appliances. I only had to call the housing department to inform them of the available dates and within minutes my phone would ring.
I only ever sub-let to females, because in general they're cleaner than idiot Irish boys away from home for the first time. After a while I stopped taking Irish girls and took only Finns or Swedes. One from the Basque country too. Never had any problems with them and they paid their bills direct to my landlord on time and in full.
Landlord was/is a scumbag in a cheap shiny suit. He had keys for all of his lets and often let himself in to poke around. After I finished my dealings with him and hand the apartment over to a lovely Swedish girl I was dating, he tried to stiff me on my deposit. I told him I wasn't leaving until he paid me back, as I'd decorated the flat myself at my own expense and also bought new carpets for every room and laid it myself. He actually said to me after seeing the job I did on the flat that by rights, he could increase the rent as the standards were that much higher now. An utter fucking cunt.
But in the end he attacked me in the streets and the neighbours called the coppers, who showed up in minutes.
He agreed to pay me the next morning, and when I met him he handed me an envelope and walked away. I checked the amount: it was only half of what I gave him, so I chased him down the street, handed him back the envelope and said I was going directly to the cops at Rathmines. He paid up the full amount, fuming and sweating, and I laughed and told him to go fuck himself.
That was twenty-three years ago, and I'm still paying less than that up here today - and for multiple times the benefits of Finnish housing. Hot water, central heating, garbage, parking, maintenance, etc.
But the notion of paying an Irish landlord two and a half grand a month?
For some poxy little bedsit full of used cheap furniture?
Fuck that - I leave that to the chumps who are too scared to leave.
Stay there, and suck it up - it'll only kill you in the end.

Give this forum the ability to drag and drop pictures, there is no reason to create a picture thread if people can't easily post them, and it will give everyone something interesting to see, other than all this nationalist bickering that everyone seems obsessed with.
