The Irish class system is a curse and in some ways worse than the British Class System. In Ireland it's not what you know, but who you know. Anybody who tries to deny it is a liar.

We have this weird notion in Ireland that we've no class system...that we're all mostly equal, that hard work gets you places etc - which is rubbish. Just look at professions such as law and media for instance...whole generations following in their father's and grandfather's footsteps. The same families have been running the show since independence.

We don't have HBO Max in Ireland unfortunately due to Sky. But if we did it'd probably be my favourite streaming service as I love Warner Bros stuff - their animation in particular. Streaming services are generally terrible here - including our version of Netflix. The Paramount+ app is absolutely awful (mobile in particular), and only goes up to 1080p...with loads of missing content. The only reason anyone would ever have Amazon Prime or Apple TV is if it comes as part of a prime membership, or as part of a deal for buying a new iPhone etc. Discovery+ is absolute rubbish and worth getting maybe once a year for the snooker. Sky's NOW TV is generally bad value, but can be gotten for as little as €1 a month.

Americans are lucky when it comes to streaming services. I'd say the only streaming service we have over here which could be deemed better than its American counterpart is Disney+. Unlike in America where Hulu is a separate subscription....with Disney+ in Ireland / Europe you get all of the Hulu content included in "Star", e.g. Futurama and Solar Opposites. But other than that, the streaming service landscape is much better over in the US - and a lot of that comes down to Sky's monopoly (Rupert Murdoch/ Comcast).

That said I am worried about the path HBO Max is taking, particular under Zaslav. Between removing hundreds of Looney Tunes shorts, HBO shows and adding Discovery+ rubbish into the existing app...he seems to be doing a lot of damage to the brand. Warner Bros = high quality television...Discovery = rubbish. At least here in Ireland it is anyway, apart from the snooker competition each year.

Neither are worth the price, but soon Amazon will again be the sole provider of Thursday night NFL and in order to watch those extra 4 games a month I will be signing up for Prime again until the season ends. In the U.S., there is really only one sport that everyone watches, and that is the NFL. It is insanely popular and I have not missed many televised games since about the age of 10, going back to the 70's and the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers dynasties.

So they'll get me on the hook for about 5 months a year for around $25 a month, just for the Thursday games. The upside to watching the Thursday game is the streaming quality, it actually comes in at 4K, and nothing else I stream does, so that is really cool to see. Sky TV and Murdoch media empire has always been shit, the only thing successful with Sky was their (now defunct) cycling team. It doesn't surprise me that the streaming empire is better here, it's probably better here than anywhere else, but much of it, and the prices that are always rising, is still garbage, but much less so than your options.

NFL looks interesting. I don't understand the rules but I can see it becoming something I could get into. I've seen some NFL games down through the years and it seems like an entertaining sport. The only thing which seemed a tad bit annoying was all of the ad-breaks (commercials). When I was over in New York I got a Giants jersey, as well as a Yankees baseball bat, both of which I still have. I'd love to see an NFL and Baseball game if I'm ever over there again.

You're definitely lucky to have HBO Max, 4k Paramount+ and a decent Netflix over there. About the only streaming service I consider worth an annual subscription in Ireland is Disney+. But again we get all of the Hulu stuff added in - or at least most of it. $25 also isn't too bad in comparison to what NOW TV charges for Sky Sports, aka. you'd probably be paying double 25 dollars a month if they had the rights to NFL games. It wouldn't surprise me if Sky tried their hand at hijacking the rights to solely broadcast NFL as they've done so with many other games. They (Sky) are also the reason we can't get HBO Max over here as they've an exclusive rights deal in place for all WB content until 2025...which will probably be expanded upon given that David Zaslav doesn't seem too eager to expand the service internationally.

Americans should count their lucky stars they don't have to deal with Sky - they are absolute pests.
