Love the music video in particular, is that the Helsinki Metro?
Yeah, and it's kind of fun in that that video was filmed (again in the dead of night in the metro) shows all the same stations except now they've all been upgraded. They're just putting the final touches to the Sörnäinen metro stop I usually use after a couple of decades of severe neglect. The entire area became home to the Helsinki junkie set, who attended a nearby rehab for their heroin substitutes. It's a sad sight to see, especially the sheer numbers of them in wheelchairs, missing legs mostly (blood and muscle poisoning from shooting up through the legs) but some with arms missing as well.
There's something really ghostly about their faces though? Ever noticed how junkies who've survived their habit from decades of use all seem to look the same? Sunken eyes, even more sunken lips, hollow cheekbones like a skeleton, pale white skin, whiter than white. Horrible shit. But now they've cleaned up the area and the treatment centre was moved out of the place into the furthest suburbs and outlaying hospitals.
The metro line has, over the last five years, added dozens more stations miles out into the suburbs to the north, east, and west. Where previously there were seven lines, now there are multiples of that stretching into the bordering countryside in some cases.
I lived at Sörnäinen for about two years before moving to here. It's a handy spot and very close to the centre, but it is/was very noisy back then and the round park beneath our window was where the junkies hung out in summer. They stayed at the nearby drunk tank, got their breakfast and were given their day money before being sent out at 0700 until 2300. They all chip in and spent the day money at the local supermarket on slabs of beer and then reconvene to the park where bedlam usually ensued until the cops show up. That'll silence them, but only for so long. I was glad to get out to this far more settled neighbourhood.
Even after twenty-odd years, I still find new things about this city.
